ciprian_florea - 2 January 2024 Disappointing at every department... After being actively bored by the "Army of thieves", one would expect that the involvement of a superstar director like Zack Snyder would bring some well deserved quality to this zombie packed sequel.
Snyder not only directs and produces, but also does the cinematography and this is the weakest link in a rusted chain of elements of something that looks like one of the worst episodes of "The walking dead"...
Leaving aside the long, bad dialogues and childish script, this movie has so many useless blurred shots that it makes you wonder if Snyder's ophthalmologist was ever available for him. Unfortunately, cheap means to creat tension don't work and quantity doesn't necessarily means quality...
Just another big budget zombie movie to forget...
merithin - 26 September 2023 Producers should be embarrassed Watched army of thieves and enjoyed it quite a bit. So decided to watch this movie as the sequel. I have not watched zombie movies before. I thought it worth a try thinking the production would be the same as the prequel. And continue the plot line. Wow was I wrong. It's like the movies were made by different people. No acting, incoherent plot, every major character dies, nothing intriguing about anything. Nothing special about the characters. They tried to be relevant but failed. Even the bad guys were more annoying then bad. Don't waste your precious time on this poor excuse for a heist movie.
SoumikBanerjee25 - 8 November 2022 Snyder atleast tried something new! What I adore most about 'Army of the Dead' is that Snyder attempted something new here, he made an effort to get rid of at least a couple of customary tropes of the genre so that he could bring something fresh to the table, which he did and he did so within his boundaries and limitations.
Make no mistake, this is a fun movie, I am not implying it is not, it gave me a ton of things to enjoy and to satisfy my ulterior cravings for some mindless entertainment.
Having said that, I still like to believe that with better Writing, especially on the characters, could have yielded much better results. It has been an hour or so since I completed the film and I am already struggling to remember even the mere names of those characters.
That goes to show how forgettable they truly were.
pointypeach - 24 August 2022 Didn't like it. So Kate went insisting on going along with the crew to save woman. One woman. Then ran of to save her without telling anyone. Which led to EVERYONE dying. Including that woman. WTF.
MuttleyAndTheHeliumGang - 3 August 2022 Army of the Dead - Moronic, Insufferable Characters, Cool Gory Effects & Action.. Semi-Enjoyable. Now it has been a year and a couple months since Army of the Dead came out on Netflix. When I watched this movie for the first time I think it had only been out a week tops. And since then, I have watched Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead three full times, and roughly the last hour I have watched maybe a further two or three times. This is cuz there are certain scenes, some parts of this film that I think are pretty cool, a few awesome scenes. I'm gonna briefly, but not too vaguely, mention some of my pros and cons of the film. Sadly, I think there may be one or two more cons. Nevertheless, I have a few good things to say about it.
Pros : 1) Wonderfully grim goriness, splatter movie reminiscent and outperforms several zombie movies this way. The brutality is definitely, very, quite prominent. Yes. While it isn't over the top, and it isn't countless times where they're soaked in blood and their parts scattered all over the floor, this still provides a decent amount of gruesome, quite bloody disgusting carnage. It isn't the best I have seen in movies but they did a good job. 2) Effects, they aren't amazing and, due to one of the cons I will get to in a bit, are kind of held back, restrained a little. Mostly, though, their practical effects, makeup and costume design looks great. You would think the look and concept of these zombies would look good due to the quite large film budget and given the fact it's a long film and the antagonists play a huge part. Mostly the characters of Zeus & the Queen look disgustingly, viciously awesome. Zeus is actually quite creepy. 3) Characters. Again, cons. But for the pros, I mention the ones whom are semi-likeable, at the very least they're not annoying and illogical (ok, maybe a little). The good : Dieter (You could see why they focused on this character most of all, when you include Army of Thieves). Dieter is squeamish, jumpy and nervous at times, quite funny. He's the brains; he also has a fun character dynamic with the best character I am about to mention that I like in this, that is Vanderohe. Alongside Ludwig Dieter, the standout characters. The only others I like are : Lilly and Guzman. This and should you include villains, then the ZombieTiger and Zeus are pretty cool. The Alpha Queen is okay as well. Tanaka is just... whatever lol.. 4) While altogether it isn't mind blowing or second to none, the third act is pretty solid, despite a few unbearable moments. Act 1-2 aren't nearly as good.
Cons : 1) the colours and lighting are abysmal and I feel I'd be unable to watch it if they were even so much as 1% more prominently showcased altogether. The film *looks* really, really bad. It is gritty, grim... not in a good way. This is part of why my pros for 2) above are slightly held back, sure their effects and whatnot are solid but the colour palette and lighting and overall look makes it some 50/50 at best. 2) Time length. This movie could have been shortened down EASILY. They could have cut out at least 30-45 minutes. It would have worked best had they made a 1 hour 35 minutes movie instead of 2 hours 25 minutes movie. 3) the first and second acts - I say the first 1 hour 35 to 1 hour 45 minutes is the weakest. The remaining 40 minutes or so it works and is best/most entertaining/actually has a few things going on that *mean* something. 4) over abundance of plot holes 5) unnecessary, annoying, and frankly INSUFFERABLE characters with zero likability, horrendous traits and sadly mediocre acting which doesn't help with the fact the characters suck. Scott Ward played by Batista, the main protagonist, I don't like at all. Worst character ever EVER shown to us audiences on screen is Kate Ward, his daughter played by... ?!?!? I don't even know, but all she talks about is stupid Geeta, and somehow becomes a master gun professional in like 5 seconds at the end basically headshotting every zombie in one go. Give a character whiny and insufferable and beyond aggravating a gun and they're alll of a sudden Tom Clancys Splinter cell, Sam Fisher. Others I don't like whatsoever are the helicopter pilot, the Aliens Vasquez ripoff, Maria, Martin - who got wrecked by the tiger and still it wasn't enough, Burt... Just your typical "unlikable characters outweighs the likeable characters" situation. 6) illogical dumb decisions and contrived drivel that makes you shake your head and facepalm (Zeus on a horse outruns a helicopter, a little tiny helmet can stop, altogether withstand various bullets to the head, dieter throwing in vanderohe when he himself could have gone in.. uh.. with him, All the stuff which could easily have been avoided without greater risk, I.e. The blood vile samples and going in in the first place.. Like, I'm not super smart, I don't consider myself an intelligent person or something but even I could pick out multiple times when something didn't add up or make sense and was blatantly absurd and added more plot holes) and if they're aware of it all (Snyder and whoever) then.. I guess I... uhh.. understand. 7) I'll leave it at 7; and in this I'll say : the storyline/writing/plot, substance, emotional depth, likability, situations and tasks, characters morals, decisions and traits, multiple heart to heart scenes including the Wards, the whole obnoxious and overbearing "Geeta" mini subplot stupid thing, among soooooooocmuch more, could have been done so much better. All of it.
As it stands, 5/10 I give it. Generously, I say 5.4 out of 10 because of the stuff with Dieter, vanderohe and the zombies and Zeus, and how it is basically a no-zone vegas, sort of.. dead end wasteland lmao. That part of the film's concept I'll admit was pretty cool. Also, the fact that this isn't even 100% zombies and some of them are like, super zombies (alphas), and there's stuff in here to do with aliens and potential robots is... interesting. They should expand this universe more. I mean, we have this, Army of Thieves and whatever else is to come. A sequel film, though, focusing on Vanderohe, a zombie antidote, situated and located south would be cool.
5.4/10. And I guess it's a good thing that Army of Thieves is a 7....?
