Duped and sold to a brothel, a young woman fearlessly reclaims her power, using underworld connections to preside over the world she was once a pawn in.
cikalmndaptri - 17 February 2024 Powerful nad shine out of darkness I always recommend this movie whenever someone ask me out. After watching it, I get some sort of empowerment excitement all of a sudden, this feeling is what always gave me shivers whenever I talked or remember about this movie.
I love how the movie showed me the other part of the world that I may not know until I watched it. Although there are plenty of movies out there that already talked about this, but the movie truly depict specifically how life at brothel really looks like -or worse-
I always think that movies are art where everyone can potray how gross or nice, sinful or kindful, and this how this movie really felt like.
Moreover, I think this movie is easy to understand at some point that it's suitable to watch on your boring or break days. The female lead truly showed me what persistance and "come back stronger" truly means. As a teenage girl who live under mediocrity, I am amazed that in other part of the world there are real people who experience the same or even worse as this movie depicted. And those, what I call is shining even after darkness of darkness go after you unpleasantly.
me-78649 - 23 June 2023 Well done, Alia! This film was so well-done. Spellbinding story, and superb performance by Alia Bhatt! If this were an American film. She'd be a shoe-in for an Oscar. Outstanding work in character growth. Heartwarming and awe-inspiring!
Alia Bhatt is already beloved, but this--as another reviewer said--takes her right out of her usual fare. This should have been challenging. But, Alia makes it feel like she breathed herself into the story. And, what a story! No spoilers, but this is a fascinating perspective on a lesser-known part of Indian history. And, how can we resist a not-cheesy story about female empowerment?
jagangoshh - 21 January 2023 PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME Heroine banne aayi thi kambaqt poora ka poora cinema bangayi this line which comes during the climax of the movie summarizes the journey of gangu, the underdog story we've all heard and watched so many times, Extravagant bhansali sets, music, dance we've all heard and watched so many times, Stupendous Alia Bhatt performance we've all heard and watched so many times but this underdog story is different, this Bhansali movie is different, this Alia Bhatt performance is different , it makes you smile, it makes you laugh, most importantly it hurts, we don't get to see a performance like this everyday I think it might be the best acting performance since I think seema biswas in bandit queen.
discerninguser - 7 September 2022 Wasted opportunity to make a meaningful movie Sanjay Leela Bhansali must be the worst choice of filmmaker to make a movie on the gritty and sleazy underbelly of prostitution in Mumbai.
A guy who is famous for the exceedingly lavish and pompous settings for his movies rather than any directorial abilities shouldn't be allowed near such topics with a barge-pole.
The real individual on whom this movie is made was a non-glamourous, jaded prostitute/lady don in Mumbai's rather infamous Kamathipura. Bhansali has tried hard to glamourize the titular character by having her dance, pose and mouth flamboyant dialogues. Basically yet another poor attempt to make criminals look glamourous and fashionable.
Alia Bhatt is highly over-rated actress who has proven her utter lack of talent in yet another wasted role. She doesn't look like an experienced prostitute; nor has she tried. She looks exactly like what she is in real life - a Papa ki Pari.
SLB and Alia should have studied movies such as "Monster" to see how an amazingly beautiful actress like Charlize Theron can be transformed into a ugly looking prostitute. What a wasted opportunity!
preeternity - 11 August 2022 Overrated I honestly do not get the fuss about Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt. I know a lot of people would differ but I find Bhansali movies highly over rated. They are just beautifully packaged films with very little substance.
If you remember Deepika's scene from Ramleela when she fills in for her injured mother, you would find that Gangubai is just a caricature of that. Also, the dialogues are cringeworthy.
I do not enjoy Bhansali movies but they do offer some good songs, which were missing from this one. I don't even remember any of the songs.
The movies has nothing more to offer than what is already shown in the trailer. Don't waste your time.
