biciko-18622 - 27 May 2024 Enjoyable, but with its share of flaws On one hand, Lightyear is an enjoyable animated adventure film that captures the spirit of classic sci-fi exploration and discovery. The animation is vibrant and detailed, and the voice acting is excellent, particularly from Chris Evans and Taika Waititi. The film's sense of humor and witty banter are also enjoyable. On the other hand, the film suffers from a convoluted and overly complex storyline that can be difficult to follow at times. Additionally, some viewers may find the pacing slow and the themes somewhat heavy-handed. Lightyear is a fun and entertaining film, but it may not be everyone's cup of tea and will probably not be remembered as an eternal Pixar classic down the line.
dalimilzrubek - 21 January 2024 Poster boy for Pixar's decline Probably the weakest Pixar to date (excluding the notorious Cars sequels).
There is almost nothing in this film to make it unique, the story is extremely derivative, characters are generic, the visuals are boring and uninventive - especially compared to more recent "Elemental". I feel like that by next week I will not remember anything about this film, perhaps only that it was some spinoff from Toy Story.
It would have been better if Pixar completely flopped trying to create something new, instead of resigning to create bland average.
We just have to accept that the bullseye years are gone and we will have to suffer through sever mediocre films to see one great one.
littlecrazydinosaurandy34 - 5 November 2023 'You're mocking me, aren't you?' Hi peeps! I hope you're doing good today, and I'm bringing you a new review. This time I'm gonna be talking about the movie Lightyear that came out in June.
Lightyear is a Pixar movie connected to Toy Story franchise. When I heard about this being in works, I looked forward to it. Actually, Buzz Lightyear used to be my favorite character in Toy Story movies, so even better. The plot of the movie tells about Lightyear and his crew being stuck on a planet and in following years building a colony there. Buzz is trying to find a way how to get home, but every attempt is unsuccessful...
Let's talk about story. TBH, I loved everything that happened there. Traveling to the future, a cute robo-cat Sox being everywhere, fighting with Zurg, new characters appearing... Everything was just interestingly made. And plus the outstanding animation. I have no words.
The characters were mostly sympathetic. The creators left Buzz with his typical temper from TS (and also the famous line - 'You're mocking me, aren't you?'). Lol. Another character that caught my attention was the leader Alisha Howthorne. I liked how she supported Buzz despite his mistakes. What a shame she wasn't there for a longer time.
BTW, do you remember the twist of Zurg and Buzz from Toy Story 2? It had played its role in the movie, too! But it was quite different. (Sorry, I don't wanna spoil here too much.)
Anyway, I don't see particularly any negatives. I enjoyed the movie from the beginning to the end. It met my expectations, maybe even better.
P. S.: Again, I read few reviews and a lot of people didn't like it. I was little surprised because I thought it's gonna be as awaited as TS movies. But OK, everyone's opinion.
I give it 10/10.
tygertygerburningbright - 1 January 2023 Repeat scenario, not much new It feels like every cartoon these days has the same elements. I just watched another before this and they are literally the same thing except for the cast.
Clumsy group of people jeopardising the mission. The one who is good at the job resentfully accepts these people and their cockups. A very talented pet joins the hero to save the day several times. They try to complete a mission, the rookies become a bit better but still suck and the hero teaches them how to be better all the while learning to accept others who aren't as good as him. And on and on.
The story seems different but characters and the things happen during the adventure is nearly the same thing in a lot of the productions. We need better storytelling.
To me this is one of the most mediocre pixar films and most productions have the same feeling after having watched the third Disney animation today.
leeeoooooo-16014 - 8 December 2022 To Infinity and Beyond! I don't know why this movie was a flop.
It's everything I expect from a Buzz Lightyear movie and more.
Eye candy everywhere and many clear nods to previous space movies.
Casting was great, even if it isn't original to Toy Story. That was a toy Buzz Lightyear after all.
Fun secondary characters and just the kind of team we've seen Buzz Lightyear lead in Toy Story. They're not the team you want but they're the team you've got so don't complain and make the best use of it!
They'll surprise you.
The music was good with nods to Gustav Holst's "The Planets."
If Ron Cobb didn't design the ships, they were surely inspired by his designs.
jordyntsmith - 17 November 2022 Interesting Ideas, but Average Execution The supposed origin story of Buzz Lightyear.
I think this movie had some interesting concepts and actually would have worked better if it were not branded with the titular Toy Story character. While Chris Evan's does a good job as Buzz and his character does feel consistent with the Toy Story world, the story itself is not consistent with what was presented in Toy Story.
I liked time travel elements, though I wish more time had been given to the consequences of Buzz's time jumping. I liked the plot twist in the end, even though it feels as though it departs from the previously established lore (and leaves some other plot holes). But the movie felt like it focused too much in action set pieces and not enough on development of the characters. The plot had this potential, but it didn't quite live up to it.
RebelPanda - 26 October 2022 Interstellar for kids I've been a fan of Toy Story all my life, this movie is not for people like me.
Lightyear is for a different generation, and that's a beautiful thing. Surprisingly, it's not as gimmicky the trailers made it seem. The unique time travel premise was definitely full of potential, but the script could've used more revisions. Buzz actually has a developed personality and character arc, though wholly unlike Tim Allen's Buzz. I was always more of a Woody fan anyways. There were some really heartwarming moment, and it provided a message distinct from its predecessors. I enjoyed this harmless low stakes sci-fi adventure.
