Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Intrepid detective Benoit Blanc finds himself at a lavish private estate on a Greek island, but how and why he comes to be there is only the first of many puzzles. Blanc soon meets a distinctly disparate group of friends gathering at the invitation of billionaire Miles Bron for their yearly reunion. As in all the best murder mysteries, each person harbors their own secrets, lies and motivations. And when someone turns up dead, everyone is a suspect.

Still a Great Mystery, Late on Emotional Value
I would have to say this is just as good as the last! Almost... The mystery and suspense is still amazing. The movie still managed to keep me guessing from the start. The acting is still incredible! Rian Johnson really knows how to cast his characters. Benoit Blanc is still amazing as ever. The one small gripe that I have with this movie is that it sets up the emotion a little too late. Blanc is still able to find that one personal connection that could get us through the film. It adds emotion value to the story. I just think it was implemented a little too late. Still. This movie still has incredible characters, amazing intrigue, and it still has that emotional value.

    More Layers than Laughs
Convoluted and murky story line presented with stunning visuals. Fine performances by the entire cast but much of the humor falls flat. Still a fun romp, and the extended reveal using the cinematic technique of flashbacks from differing perspectives adds to the intrigue. Intentionally preposterous, you can just enjoy the spectacle of the venue and the eccentricity of the characters, most notably Daniel Craig's detective Blanc as a Columbo style sleuth in the midst of all the disingenuous personalities making up the pool of suspects. The entire denouement is fittingly melodramatic and pompously exhilarating.

    The real murder mystery
In the enigmatic realm of Glass Onion, the true mystery unfolds as the actors, despite their prowess, manage to murder their performances. A baffling twist that leaves audiences questioning the execution of this otherwise promising ensemble.

The star-studded cast brings promise to the table, but unfortunately, the acting falls far short of expectations.

As for the storyline, in its attempt to achieve complexity, unfortunately veers into a lengthy and drawn-out narrative. The effort to be intricate feels forced, leaving viewers grappling with a sense of convolution rather than genuine depth..

    Meh
I honestly don't know what to say about this movie. I feel like i had fun, but i also feel it's mediocre and bad on so many levels.

First of all, Craig is a great actor, but his accent is just dumb. It's inconsistent, obviously forced and doesn't work. His actual performance is suffering because of his constant curving and twisting of his jaw. Johnson still, after second movie, doesn't justify its existence, and it just breaks immersion every single time Craig speaks.

As a mystery, this movie doesn't work at all. First act is intriguing but too slow. Second act is exposition dump and conversation galore that screeches brakes on the movie that basically just started 1 hour + in. Third act is just plain stupid and probably the worst part of the movie. Fun elements and moments can be found in each of the three acts, but i don't know if that ultimately makes a good movie.

Characters, all but one, are undeveloped caricatures. Most of these actors are underused. Some performances are bad. Some characters/actors don't even have a reason to be in the movie. Johnson constantly winking at the audience, making commentary about all ''trendy'' things and people, feels cheap. If he was born 10 years later, this guy would be a youtuber critic whose dream is to become a director. That's how his movies feel to me. Influenced by so many styles and things that he doesn't have a thing of his own. Directing-wise, he has some interesting ideas, but it's debatable how much they work. Writing-wise, his movies really aren't as smart as he thinks they are. This movie is full of plot holes, illogical decisions, and many other stuff that isn't well thought out.

Not sure if it's the location, the tone, the colors, occasional comedy, or something else making this messy experience not boring, but just thinking about all the minor things that don't work really makes me question my actual enjoyment of the movie and why i didn't completely hate it.

Are we living in an alternate reality?
This has to be one of the most pompous, disastrously clumsy and downright awful films I've ever seen. Who on earth thinks this is acceptable awards fodder, really, who the hell watched this film and thought it deserved anything but a razzie. Knives Out was an acceptable distraction, a handful of decent performances helping to mask the overcompensation and self-satisfied approach Rian's accustomed to.

Glass Onion on the other hand has no redeeming features, no subtlety, just awkwardly shoehorned in culture war dialogue (that Rian doesn't seem to understand). Craig's accent, the costumes, the wooden writing, the lack of depth... you'd get a better cinematic experience watching an episode of StreetSharks.

    Improvement From The First
Let me start; the first movie was ruined for me because I expected one thing but got another. That's just me personally! This one was fun and more of what I expected from this title. It was fun and had twists and turns, perfect for those who of us who are not super heavy into murder mysteries. The first movie is needed; it sets the stage for this world/ series and gets you used to Daniel Craig's character so you can just jump right into this one. His character is very clever in both movies and carries it, but it is shocking and the first move was a bit of sacrificial offering to get the audience used to his take. Now we know this character enough and have history and can now see him in action which makes the move more fun overall. Great cast, great acting, and a clever movie overall.

    Enid Blyton wrote better mysteries.
Encouraged by the good reviews, I sat down with two others, telling them to be prepared to be entertained. After ten minutes, I started to feel embarrassed. After 15 minutes, I had to ask "This is terrible, isn't it?" I could feel the relief, when they agreed to give up that quarter hour of their lives and try something else.

For those who do not know the works of Enid Blyton, she wrote adventure books for children. The most famous being The Famous Five. Two boys, two girls and a dog. Maybe forerunners of Scoobydoo. Get the picture? Anyway, more adult and entertaining that this load of rubbish. I actually went back to see the rest of the movie, when I was alone. It got decidedly worse!

    very enjoyable sequel
I was worried that this would be a let down, but it's pretty good! I thought the cast was enjoyable, if not a little exaggerated, and their chemistry with each other was great. The ending was incredibly satisfying. I was worried that the atmosphere shift from rainy boston to sunny greece would ruin it, but it was a fun switch up and contributed greatly to the feel. I think this was the first film to address covid straight forward, and the way they used it to introduce all the characters was interesting (I am glad that they didn't spend too much time on it as I've had enough Covid for at least this decade) Overall, a fun, entertaining film with a good cast and great writing. I believe this will be a Trilogy and if the next one is as good this has the potential to be one of the most enjoyable trilogy of recent.

Good fun and entertaining subversions throughout.
Another fantastic subversion of the genre and although there isn't much opportunity for the viewer to solve the mystery ahead of time, it's still very entertaining to watch. It's mostly the elite rich conniving to keep their fortune and how their relationships are nothing but for show, but there are moments of brilliance in its first half. The film gets better as it goes along and once it starts explaining the mystery within the mystery, it really shines, even though it wasn't as complex as it could have been. An eclectic cast of characters in a visually interesting setting and the ending was good fun.

    A well polished trash pile
An entertaining movie with high production value but lacking in substance. Good acting performances carry a lacking script and story which makes for a bearable first watch. But further contemplation on the story reveals that it is a incoherent mess where the characters actions are based on where the creators need the story to go, as opposed to actions that would be reasonable for the established characters, or even basic human logic.

The conclussion of the story is to be weary of things with a polished exterior that are designed to look intelligent, that in reality are just stupid and substance-less. This perfectly sums up my opinion of the movie.
