isopodaquarium - 19 June 2024 pretty good! I was definitely skeptical of a predator movie coming out in 2022, let alone an original from hulu, but i was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Plenty of action AND the dog lives.
Sure, some of the special effects were kinda cheesy, and the end was eh, but overall, i'd watch this movie again. I did like the concept of an alien visiting earth in a time like the 1700s (when this movie is set, actually) and i feel like said concept was well played out in this film. Plus, i liked the darkness in the final battle being contrasted with the bright green blood. The acting in this movie was also pretty good, despite a few scenes, but if you're looking for something to watch with action and sci-fi, give this a watch!
zorn907 - 20 May 2024 Dangerous things are, in fact, dangerous The visual language of the movie is very trailershot-y, and pretty unimmersive.
The structure isn't the most elegant either. You basically watch her and the predator do their own respective thing, waiting for them to eventually meet/shi(r)t to get real.
Our leading lady was supposed to feel heroic I guess, seeing as she was often trying real hard to look badass. The script isn't on her side, though, I think, since she usually makes dumb decisions, whenever it counts the most. It's like she constantly forgets that she herself went out there to seek danger, and that dangerous things are, in fact, dangerous. And since she always gets saved by Ex Machina X it never actually feels like it's her vs the wilderness or that thing.
Also her face....don't know how else to put it. :D
The rest of the cast, the dialogue and the story in general aren't good enough to carry anything either. They all look and move like cosplaying nerds who make the least clever decisions in tactical situations.
It's also really unbelievable to me that this movie cost 65 million to make. I mean, where did all that money go? Into animating that clunky looking bear that adds nothing to the story? What?
It's not like this makes the movie worse or anything, it's just surprising, because it very much looks and feels like a low budget amateur project (except for the cg bear, which doesn't look great, but also not cheap (financially speaking)).
sadak7599 - 28 February 2024 Overrated prequel. This recent installment of the Predator franchise has its merits: a good atmosphere and not bad storytelling. The CGI wild animals are maybe too much obvious. The return to the basics that made the original film a classic is a good strategy.
Unfortunatelly, we know too much about the creature and the movie lacks suspense, is totally predictable, no surprises, and that does not add up to the Predator mithology.
Furthermore, while the first act of the movie is fine, gradually it is impossible to keep with the suspension of disbelief, when the main character, a young girl, begins to develop somehow incredible superhuman powers, making her able to bare hand fight a way bigger, stronger to the point of kill a grizzly with a single punch, smart creature with advanced technology.
The alien is inconsistent: at a given moment can barehand kill a bear in just seconds, and at the next moment a few guys can fight against it, and even injure it. At least they lost...
It smells too much to the nowadays zeitgeist: female, preferably non-white (of course, white guys in the movie are bad guys), empowered main character, outsmarting any men or alien around, and able to fight like a mix of Hawkeye and Wolverine, with minimal training and no resources. To me, the character of Naru is to this franchise as Rey is to Star Wars, or even more unbelieveable.
The movie could have been better if they hadn't put all the weight on the protagonist and more in the collective effort against their otherworld enemy.
Anyway, the movie is entertaining enough for a watch.
rubyferraday - 6 January 2023 Best Predator Movie since the Original It took me a while to watch this as I didn't realise it was a Predator movie. Even then I was wary, because the last movie called The Predator might be one of the most disappointingly bad movies I've ever watched. But I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I hadn't read anything about it so went in without preconceptions, basically expecting another awful Predator movie.
I do have criticisms of the movie, like, why would the Predator be killing animals. If nails and teeth are weapons, why not kill unarmed humans? Also, it was cold. Why did the Predator come in cold weather? Is the hot weather a regional based thing? And why the bone mask? Silly.
But anyway, I did like the main character and the other actors and the predator. I think taking it back 300 years and making out the predator tech changed a lot in such a short time was weird, given how much tech the predator already had. Look, the movie does require some serious suspension of belief. But so did the first one. There was no way Arnie was really going to kill that thing. It really needed to go back way further, but they wouldn't have then had the opportunity to introduce that location, the Commanche and the French hunters as the real bad guys.
And on that, why has nobody figured out in any of the movies that if you just put down your weapons and go about your daily life, the Predator won't even notice you and is rendered completely harmless. That's what I would do if I saw a predator - drop any weapons I might be holding and give it a wave. Why does everyone insist on fighting it? It'll get bored after a while and go home.
butroncdms - 29 December 2022 One of the east-to-predict movies I've seen in a long time. This must be one of the east-to-predict movies I've seen in a long time.
The photography was alright.
The acting was OK not so good.
The visual stuff nice.
But the storyline was weaker than the poem I wrote in year 4.
Predictable but also not so credible, like a tiny girl hunting gigantic beast and leading a team of dudes hunters.
Everything else was entertaining, like predator coming back to life in 2022 and some of his weapons agains North American Indians.
Like I said that storyline was 'softy' and extremely predictable, like almost you could tell what was going to happen every other minute.
mhdyurs - 16 December 2022 Waste of time Not sure why I even bothered watching this movie, i guess it was the rating which amazes me that people have rated it so high. Same old plot with the lead actress having modern American accent which is like huh?
The lead having to prove something especially a female one is getting way too old to be dragged again and again. I get there are big proponents of politics in movies but there has to be a strong story and character to base that off. No struggle or build up just agenda. The only good thing about the movie was rather than current or future time they went back which could've been such a great idea because humans had far better hunting skills.
cencys - 5 December 2022 A bit of fine tuning could have helped Before i watched the movie i heard all the negative things people had to say about this movie. I kinda watched it skeptical but i enjoyed it somewhat it had a few interesting things to offer. The story is pretty decent good even but far from perfect. It feels like a reboot more than a prequel. In the first movie yes they mention their man disappear but have no idea what it os. If truly this was a prequel wouldnt billy know something about his ancestor defeating it and the knowledge on how to be imparted to him. The heroine is badly written, unlikable, selfish and will sacrifice any and everyone to get what she wants. They are a lotta plot holes and come on i know most of the warriors werent worthwhile but whats a predator movie without a skinned human body. The movie lacked the journey of how the prdator eventually choses human as its choice trophies. I could go on and on.
transporteur-38695 - 23 November 2022 Another Badredator Boring! The Script ist far away from the entertaining Plots of the two Originals. The setting ist great, i was so thrilled about the Synopsis and the first sneak peaks of the Story, but when i was watching this whatever IT IS, i was upset. Boring, unlogical ( yes i know it is a scyfy-horror-action Flic), and the Action feels like in the old 80s TV Shows. The Predator ist so dump, that it really hurts. He is wounded by his own Tracking-Arrows, so come on. He Kills a Army of ruthless Mercenarys in a blink of an eye, but He is defeated by an unexpierenced Warrioress ? No, not a real Predator ! It is sad that such a good Actress like Amber Midthunder is wasted, in such a boring and dramatical NONSENSE Trash. Sorry Disney you can't create Action Syfy Horror Flics.
crimeagainstcreation - 13 November 2022 All About Intentions PREY is everything you should want from a modern action drama, and it's a great bonus that it has a combined First Nation historical and fictional mythical setting, if you are a consumer of such. This film takes the western genre to a new level, where the rawness from the Revenant is mixed with top level CGI, and a bit of Sci-Fi. One can truly smell and taste the gritty environment, and with a brilliant cinematography, together with a perfectly balanced dramaturgical buildup, it simply works. There's no unnecessary dwelling about anything, as the action runs on like a river, and every picture, scene or factor has an intention. There are loads of open metaphors and links to inspirations, and when the main character is a real live indigenous young heroin, what more can you ask for? It doesn't matter if we never get to know where the villain monster came from. The only important factor is that it's beaten with female cunning intelligence and general bravery.
