A beautiful, claustrophobic and emotional film,
Based on the true story that took the world by storm, "The Rescue of Tham Luang" is a moving account of the rescue of a men's football team from a cave in Thailand after they were trapped by dangerous rain and floods. A rescue mission is mounted in Thailand, where a group of boys and their soccer coach are trapped in an underground cave system that is flooding.

A beautiful, claustrophobic and emotional film, it seemed to be so realistic, sincere, in the pain, in individual human weaknesses and in the courage to do the impossible, running the risk of being held responsible if everything went wrong, such as, for example, the fact that they were sedated the boys, but ultimately ended up saving everyone, two volunteers in the rescue died, out of the 5 thousand who helped, from 17 different countries...

    A GRIPPING TRUE STORY...!
An Amazon Prime original from last year based on real events where 13 Thai nationals (a soccer team & their coach) were stuck in a waterlogged cave (they went there in celebration of a recent win) as torrential rains continue to make a traditional rescue a forgone conclusion. Enter a pair of cave divers, Oscar nominees Viggo Mortensen & Colin Farrell, who do manage to reach the trapped teens but due to the arduous nature of the initial assault to their site they know it's a matter of time before they'll die unless they come up w/a solution to transpo the individuals to safety. In comes an anesthesiologist, played by Joel Edgerton, who will put each rescued out, giving them shots along the way to insure the accompanying diver will bring their charge to freedom. Eking out the same results he achieved w/the seminal Apollo 13, director Ron Howard makes historical incidents come to life in a dramatic setting even though we know the outcome of the events so much so the viewer becomes so engrossed w/what's transpiring they forget the ending has already passed. Kudos to all the local talent in the film who score as many points as the leads.

How on earth did they shoot this movie
Content - I love how the movie incorporates all parts of the rescue efforts. The main narrative is focused on five members of cave rescuers from UK and Austrailia, but Howard also distributes time for a water technician with villagers, all coming together and sacrificing their livelihood and for Thailand Navy SEALs and a governor. Thai community and culture are dissolved in the movie, giving more realistic and genuine impression. The two parts of the story - foreign volunteers and solidarity within the community - are in such a harmony.

Form - Setting, camera movement, lighting, and so on.. just everything. Every component of the film 'Thirteen Lives' works its part to take audience back to June in 2018 in front of TV waiting for an update on Tham Luang Cave rescue mission. After the movie, I searched internet to find out whether it was shot in the actual Tham Luang Cave or not. It turned out that they built the whole set of intricate structure of cave. Gosh so realistic that I almost believed that it was an actual cave. Camera movement sometimes following the diver's point of view or shaking hard going up and down from water level is spectacular. Underwater filming is difficult without a doubt. Kudos to both camera team and actors who give verisimilar and breathtaking performance even under demanding condition.

    Definitely Oscar-worthy!

    Rescue Mission
This is an engaging and subtly suspenseful movie about the football team trapped in a cave, and the rescue mission carried out by a group of international divers, who heroically saved the boys and their coach. The only flaw in this movie is that I felt that they shied away from mentioning God and Jesus, when one of the survivors himself (who had been the translator for the team in the cave) thanked God and said that he felt God's hand in that cave.

The other flaw is that the movie didn't give any background glimpse on the football team or the international divers. Now I understand that time limitations probably played a role in that, but it would've been nice to get a glimpse of the background of some of the characters. Overall this is a good movie that had me engaged from beginning to end, and it is amazing that the whole team could be saved out of that cave.

    Definitely worth watching
Highly recommend. I like the approach taken to film this. It's low key and no Hollywood nonsense. Yet it's suspenseful, gripping, emotional and does not dramatize. Its 2.5 hrs long but it does not drag for one moment and immediately goes into the story and shows u the sacrifices made to rescue the children and coach. I agree with what some of the reviewers say that there's no focus on the background of the children. Actually the viewers have more information on the foreign rescuers than on those being rescued. I guess that's one fault there in this movie. But I do appreciate that the movie does show a bit of culture and lifestyle of the locals. In any case, the length of the movie is already about 2.5 hours.

    Faithful to facts but soulless.
On location, local actors, Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell what could go wrong? Ron Howard stays true to the facts and the story, and in doing so eliminates every trace of emotion or real suspense.

When this even happened in real life, people around the world were praying for those boys; terrified that the reality was some would die. What was accomplished was nothing less than a miracle made possible by humans working together. I didn't get the sense of that watching this, and there is zero footage of what it might have been like for the boys inside.

The location shots are nice, the diving shots are fine. The reminders on screen of the cave system and which links were which were handy. The performance by Mortensen and Farrell at least are watchable, but that reduces the interesting parts of the film to the two British divers instead of the boys that it should be about.

In all I found it forgettable, though the long technical expertise of Ron Howard comes through on pacing.

Skip unless you don't know the ending.
