SnoopyStyle - 9 February 2024 world needs work Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) is a pool cleaner by day and a vampire hunter by day. He had been kicked out of the vampire hunter union and his friend Big John Elliott (Snoop Dogg) gets him back in. He is assigned union rep Seth (Dave Franco) as his required partner. Heather (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) is his new neighbor. Meanwhile, Audrey San Fernando (Karla Souza) is building a vampire army and aims to take revenge on Bud by kidnapping his family.
I like some of the action. I have the most fun with the Nazarian brothers. The world is a bit half-baked. For something very simple, Bud has all those locks on the door, but the large window next to it is so breakable. Bud is completely broke and yet he doesn't look around to steal the old lady's valuables. The biggest issue is that it's not clear how wide spread are the vampires. The general public doesn't seem to be that much different despite the presence of vampires. One would expect more security everywhere. It's like the filmmaker failed to think through this world's logic. It's really bothersome. Otherwise, I like this.
becky-92346 - 31 July 2023 Surprisingly boring. Day Shift (2022) follows a hard-working, blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 10-year-old daughter. His mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income, hunting and killing vampires. Unfortunately I strongly dislike this film, it is incredibly dull and lacks a compelling plot. Also, the characters are rather unlikeable.
The cinematography is really dull and unfortunately there isn't much to talk about in terms of it. The colour palettes are mainly very warm which I feel doesn't fit the mood of the film and the camerawork itself is very low-effort. In terms of other visuals, the CGI starts off fairly impressive but just goes downhill as the film progresses.
The sound design is nothing special and the score is somewhat fitting but forgettable. Also, the soundtrack is ok but, once again, nothing to write home about. The sound design is really cheap sounding too, and the film uses a lot of goofy stock sound effects.
The acting is underwhelming and the characters are poorly written. The characters are neither likeable nor unlikeable and lack a lot of much needed substance. Additionally, the dialogue isn't written well and unfortunately a lot of the comedy doesn't hit well.
The film's structure and pacing are both extremely messy and I was surprised by how dull this movie is. It's hard to follow along and not compelling, resulting in a watch that drags on and fails to entertain. I got bored way too quickly and was happy to see it end.
andyglyndon - 13 February 2023 LoL - total waste of time. This movie was designed and made to portray white people as villains, while all black people show human emotions.
Because it is the exact opposite of reality it should be tagged as Sci-Fi.
Only managed to watch this for around half an hour.
I really tried to find it funny, or entertaining despite the obvious agenda. Unfortunately the agend is the only thing that this film was intended to promote.
It also promites violence as a dominant and desired human trait. I guess it's because it was directed by some martial artist (laughable comparison).
You will be much better off just spending that time with your family, or cats, or parrots, or eating a burger.
Zero stars.
taborfreddy - 9 December 2022 Feel-good fun! When I saw the preview the first few times on Netflix, I was a little hesitant to watch it. But I'm glad I gave this movie a chance. I finally decided to watch it after looking at the preview several times. The movie had me laughing my butt off. I noted in some reviews people talked about the film not having a story, but I think for this type of film the story is fine as it is - not serious and to the point - the film is Action-comedy. The main characters (Franco, Foxx, and Snoop) made it a fun movie to watch. I was very satisfied spending the nearly two hours watching it, and I do plan to watch it again. 🙂
youngcollind - 26 October 2022 With so much drama in the L-B-C I'll admit that a good portion of the reason I even put this on is because of Snoop Dogg. While he's not in it as much as he should be, his mere presence elevates the film. I don't care how much of a sellout he's become, the man is a national treasure and I'll stand by him in anything. He's dressed as a cowboy in this, and that's great, and refuse to elaborate further.
The rest of the film comes at you like the west coast's answer to Blade. It's rather unassuming, with no real purpose other than to crack jokes and kick ass. The humor is rarely sidesplitting, but the light hearted approach redeems many of the more basic elements. Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco do the whole cool guy/nerdy guy bit we've seen a thousand times before. I'd usually find this style of vampire to be cheesy, but since the film doesn't take them seriously, I don't have to either. The meat and potatoes is of course the relentless action, and there's a generous heaping of slick car chases and combat sequences.
It all felt like a surprisingly high end production, which got me curious, so I checked IMDB, which estimates the budget at $100,000,000. If that's is true, it seems crazy to me. That's more than this year's Nope or Morbius cost, and those have a built in audience. What studio exec was willing to put that much confidence in a stand alone, Jamie Foxx buddy cop/vampire movie, from a first time director? This thing is a b-movie at best, fun but forgettable, pretty unlikely to take the world by storm. Plus it went straight to Netflix without even getting a proper theatrical release. I don't fully understand how streaming services calculate their earnings, but I'd be surprised if this thing moved the needle enough to recoup a hundo mill. Kinda feels like buying a toddler an expensive gift then watching them play with the wrapping paper, you spent all that money and my biggest takeaway is that Snoop Dogg is dressed like a cowboy.
jsucie - 9 October 2022 Another meh movie by Netflix This movie has as much bite as a juvenile vamp fangs bring in $$$. Nothing here you won't have seen before in other movies, B movies most likely.
The performances are as expected with some really believing this will be a hit given the name power involved in this project. The plot is simple which does help this movie so it's not bogged down in trying to be something more than what it is. There are some plot holes that annoyingly are left wide freaking open to the point that no one brings it up at all past the moment. I've always liked Dave Franco but he needs to start really focusing on his evolution as an actor. All his characters are so similar and given his age; doesn't really work at all. Having Snoop Dogg in any movie is always a good thing and he's plays his part quite well.
Over all, if you're bored or looking for something to watch in October that's isn't overly realistically gory or scary but would do well as an October viewing; give this one a shot.
