butterflower-94827 - 25 June 2024 An attempt to make tarot comercial The story starts with a group of teenagers at a secluded house celebrating their friends birthday and, as any stereotypical movie goes, they snoop around the house and get into the basement. There they find a lot of stuff related to witchcraft, including a tarot deck. The girl who knew how to read takes a look at the cards and tells her friends it's bad luck to do readings with other people's cards, but proceeds to ignore her own words and use the cards for reading horoscopes.
I gotta give credit to whoever designed the cards, they look good and fit right into a horror movie, but are a little too literal. The best example of this would be the fool, which is depicted as a jester, even though the card represents innocence and naivety in some cases. This theme carries on through the movie as all the readings are barely scratching the surface of the simbolism behind the cards.
The action sequences made me hold my friends hand and bury myself into the seat, the scare factor was brought in through the atmosphere and grotesque entities. The way the environment would get more and more chaotic is fascinating and really builds tension.
Eventually someone helps them out and the end, not a satisfying or realistic outcome, left me feeling bitter sweet about the entire movie and maybe it's part of the low rating. I would not recommend the movie for a tarot enthusiast or a person that hates cliches.
shadowenderscar - 14 June 2024 Solid "starter" horror movie Tarot has an interesting premise, although it fails to fulfill its full potential. The script/plot isn't anything spectacular, you can find pretty much every horror movie cliche here. It isn't exactly boring, but it is quite predictable.
The designs of the cards themselves are cool, and might pique the interest of Tarot card readers.
Like actual cards, the characters are tossed onto the table, and you get a brief overview of each of them. They then proceeded to be killed off one by one. Needless to say, there is no opportunity to grow attached to them, save for the "main" ones.
That being said, Tarot can work as someone's first horror movie. Being PG-13, it's fairly tame and can prepare new viewers for future horror movies. If it was R rated, it could have had better kills and frights. A good majority of the kills happen offscreen or in simple ways.
