The First Slam Dunk

In his second year of high school, Ryota plays with the Shohoku High School basketball team along with Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui as they take the stage at the Inter-High School National Championship. Perfect foray into the world of manga!
This is the first manga movie I've watched as an adult, and I couldn't have asked for a better introduction.

The emotional core of the story is tight and impactful, capturing the essence of a classic underdog tale. Ryo-chan's relationship with his elder brother is poignant and beautifully established.

While the movie is filled with the usual clichés of underdog sports stories, they don't detract from its quality. In fact, the film honors these clichés through its stunning art and powerful score.

My biggest issue with the movie, however, is that many character arcs are left unexplained. As a first-time viewer of the series, I felt like I missed out on various sub-plots and emotional beats.

Another minor gripe is the tendency of basketball movies to model their "maverick" characters after Dennis Rodman. Although this makes the character and his playstyle easier to understand, the feeling of it being a rip-off never quite fades away.

Perhaps not great for non anime fans, bit long
The film is a manga basketball film that has what people are thinking while they're playing basketball. The film is about Miyagi Ryota who has tragically lost his brother and is struggling to accept the value of self worth. He got immersed into basketball which him and his brother had a passion for. In the film, him and his team play against a more recognised team. The film was good. It felt like you were actually in the basketball game and you could hear all of their thoughts about the game. The music and the heartbeat sounds was the right sort of music to make the film more dramatic and give it the right emotional tone. The characters were good because you could relate to them if you play basketball . The tempo of the film was a bit random and in some parts of the movie it goes silent, trying to make it more dramatic, but the parts aren't very significant so it makes no sense. The image quality of the film isn't up to the usual standards of modern day films. In the film, the characters movements are sometimes like NP3 characters moving. Some parts of the film are very confusing because it cuts to random shots of the characters.
