lauratabuna - 22 June 2024 Decent entertainment At first, I love horror movies. Yet I found the trailer of "Smile" so terrifying that I could not go to cinema to watch it. Especially alone. Just chickened out completely. But recently I happened to be so extremely bored and procrastinated, that checked the trailer again, found it a little bit less disturbing, and I finally watched it (alone!!!).
And I have to say - I really liked it. Excellent idea. The plot wasn't predictable, story was interesting. Few good jump scares. The cast did a great job, their performances felt truly authentic. I rooted for Rose (Sosie Bacon) and Yoel (Kyle Gallner) until the end, dr. Madeline (Robin Weigert) reminded me of the shrink I know. Loved little artsy camera things and beautiful landscapes. Decent entertainment.
lorenzodininno - 23 May 2024 Started off well, but... After seeing the first 15 minutes i believed i was about to watch a decent film but could i have been more wrong...
The first trauma scene with the patient is really well executed and that smile scared the shi out of me. But it seems the movie goes downfall after that. Every time we get a jumpscare and someone smiling at her it becomes less effective and horror is gradually lost. By the end of the movie i wasn't even scared.
And if you try to find meaning in all this, apart from the obvious evil forces threatening the protagonist, you will find a lot of plot holes that don't back up the theory that it is all an illusion and her trauma is causing all that trouble. Otherwise all of the victims wouldn't be connected through such a clear pattern.
baronr-71172 - 28 April 2024 If you enjoy horror then worth a watch. High quality final third and overall very well made. The final third of this movie is by far the strongest, the full terror of which went over my head at first but it is actually quite clever and horrifying, for that alone its worth the watch.
However, the rest of the film adheres closely to a horror film template which does get boring when you've seen it so much. The smiling gimmick does get old, and a couple of the scares are too generic/uninspired even eye rolling. Some scenes in the film do rely on shock value gore, I am not often a big fan of this but its subjective.
There are some genuinely chilling and terrifying scenes and shots which impressed me, the quality of which are great and makes this film worthwhile - I was considerably scared by this film more so than most horror films I watch.
The director is talented and despite the fact that this movie is very well made, I can't rate it too highly as the first two acts advance the plot in a way you've seen before in many horror films before which shows a lack of originality. But again that final act is very good and with many high quality scares throughout it is certainly a horror film I recommend.
cristianoandreg - 12 January 2023 Good horror movie! However,... The movie is good and keeps your attention throughout. It is super scary! However, I hate that this is one of those movies where the entire story is about explaining what happened to the person that died in the beginning of the movie. Once you understand the movie and what happened to the first death, the movie is over and no solution was provided at all. I hate when this happens since you have to wait for part 2 for solution. I hope part 2 provides a solution. Overall, it is a great horror movie!! If watching at home, I suggest watching it at night, no lights, and in a big screen for an amazing experience.
ushynnus1991 - 8 January 2023 Meh. You watch it for jump scares and that's it. Right off the bat something didn't make sense. They restrained the girl coming out of the ambulance, but let her free in the consultation (?) room. The reason to restrain someone is that if they are a danger to themselves or others. So they just let her free in a room full of things she can hurt herself with? This whole movie wouldn't happen if she was restrained.
The way they talked about mental illnesses made me cringe. It was obvious they didn't do any research at all.
I appreciated some of the camera work, shots of cars driving down the road, and upside down shots, but at times it seemed unnecessary, and doesn't add any substances to the whole movie. I get the feeling that maybe the director was a fan of shining?
The story was unoriginal, the smiles were creepy but it's pretty similar to another movie I've seen before.
They never explain the backstory of the monster? Demon?
The ending was predictable. There were a only two ways to go. If she successfully kills herself without witnesses then it would've been a weak ending.
The only thing I liked was the little twist at the end. That's one point and another point for the "big boss" at the end.
richard_kitchen - 7 January 2023 Worthwhile watch if you enjoy horror!! Let's be honest with it comes to horror films... there is a fine line between scary and stupid.
I think this movie just about stays on the right side of that line.... Maybe a tad silly at the end but I always think horrors should leave more to the imagination than use poor CGI.
It's creepy, dark and in large, the effects used are good and effective.
You never really realise how creepy a smile can be. This film really brings that to life.
As a horror film enthusiast, I'd say this is definitely worth the watch. Some good scares in there. I personally enjoyed it much more than "It Follows".
Go on, give it a go.
wilshaffner - 3 January 2023 Good until the regurgitated ending Here's the thing, the movie was actually good with some decent eerie moments and some downright disturbing scenes that made me look away and had some pretty good tension builds that lead to some adequate jump scares and was a fairly unique adaptation of the "It Follows" supernatural suspense...
until the final chapter...
when they regurgitated the same old, "main character defeats the monster and gets away only to discover that she never did and that it was all in her head and she is back in the cabin with the monster and then the monster gets her and the 'cycle continues all over again with the sequel.'" They even ended it with the big blockbuster horror ending where most of the budget went into the fire sfx which were passable at best.
It's just so drab and frequent in all these James Wan clones that it becomes too much and, for me, really negates a lot of the story building up to it.
Watch it if you prefer a typical jump scare supernatural thriller, but don't expect anything different. There are better films with similar themes. Even the reveal in It Follows felt more true to the pacing than this. Malignant was really good and different!
Just once I wish a studio would allow the director to focus on the art of telling the story and pacing of direction than inserting cheap scares and "Hollywoodizing" for the sake of big producers.
gumpr - 1 January 2023 Unbelievably predictable and Overwraught I'm frankly dumbfounded at the positive reviews for this movie. It is devoid of any intrigue and is basically a Ringu ripoff. I will give the movie credit for adding a twist to jump scares and assaulting the audience with noise scares. Who thought a phone ringing could be so scary! It has some chilling moments but at almost two hours, they are sparse, and the movie slogs its way to the insultingly predictable ending. I stated that this review doesn't contain spoilers because it can't...within the first 20 minutes of the movie it's painfully obvious what's going to happen and nothing in the movie leads you to believe otherwise. I would have given it one star, but I gave it two stars to give some credit to Sosie Bacon for her talent.
deepgagan-28555 - 30 December 2022 Best Horror Movie Ever....!! I Would Like To Say That I love to watch Horror Genre Alot & i have seen many Horror Cult Movies.
Before this movie " Hereditary " is one of my best Horror Movie from my list.....!!
But I Don't have any objection to say that " Smile " Movie take place of it......
In " Smile " Movie the BGM makes its so creepy & has great performance to give watchers " Goose Bumps " in every Horror scenes....!!
Also the acting of the " Sosie Bacon " is on another level & All the death scenes are so disturbing.....!!
Altough i can say that this movie gave a great impact on me & i Can't wait for its Sequel...!!
isaacsvigil - 29 December 2022 Boring, predictable, with little to no plot From the advertising and trailers you would think the movie would be better. You could almost predict everything that was going to happen from jump scares to straight out story line. Some of the jump scares were not needed and didn't help move the movie along. It felt like they were just adding scary things without thinking about incorporating jump scares that would make sense to the antagonist. The main antagonist made little to no sense in the fact that it's a being that can only exist if someone watches a suicide. It does bring up the question of how it all started and the movie does nothing to explain it. Overall the movie was just plain boring. It follows a therapist who has a patient who dies and she lives with trauma. It's very unoriginal and not an attention grabber.
