abbaszadeguseyn - 26 May 2024 One of best movie, but budget to high One of best movie for me 9 10, i wish about second part. Action is high level. Actors did them job perfectly, but I think budget of this movie to high even with that kind of computer effects which they did and with Actor's . Last period Netflix doing deserter series and movies. Disney as well and always budget of movies incredible high. But this movie is amazing I watched 2 times sure i will watch more. And from computers effect i did not like how they shoot footage in Azerbaijan so bad, movie with 200 million dollars budget. They did not even check how Baku is looking even view with this kind of budget, next time if u not going to take shoot in that country pls check in google how is view of city looking.
fluffchop - 10 April 2024 "we need more guns" "When the CIA's most skilled operative, whose true identity is known to none, accidentally uncovers dark agency secrets, a psychopathic former colleague puts a bounty on his head, setting off a global manhunt by international assassins."
This movie it much better than the description would suggest. It looks like a huge budget blockbuster but it's on Netflix. If they keep this up they'll bury other streaming services.
They have far too many locations which are little more than names on the screen. It becomes tedious.
It gets a little slow midway through but then picks up again for the second hour.
The chick with the bob hair is driving an AUDI and when she brakes for the tram she clearly has her feet on the clutch and brake pedals. Then later she shifts an automatic gearshift.
That sort of thing is just really sloppy for something of this budget. I didn't even bother rewinding to check because I was sure of what I'd seen. I thought oh yeah Europe could be a manual for sure which I found interesting. Then she shifts the auto shifter so no clutch in that car. It's one little thing I noticed that bugged me slightly.
It makes me laugh that the thing about James Bond in 1962 was that he has a license to kill. That quaint notion is just so far gone nowadays where everyone just kills everyone all the time for two hours of the film.
So on that note 100 gunmen can't kill one guy handcuffed to a railing in the middle of an intersection. It's crazy right?!
An ultimately enjoyable film, even if these sorts of things aren't your bag, which they're not really mine.
seveb-25179 - 11 February 2024 50 Shades Of Gray Man Another would-be action franchise starter from Netflix, likely to be successful.
I think this is pretty decent, better than many a Jason Statham movie. Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Rege-Jean Page all do a great job in their roles and those who wanted to see more of Ana de Armas as a secret agent, after her performance in James Bond "No Time To Die", get their wish.
Lots of well-choreographed action and attractive panning & trucking shots of exotic locations, but frustratingly punctuated by occasional sloppy errors and roll your eyes moments.
For example
The original recruitment of the Gray Man is a big problem for me. Eventually we find out that he killed his father in order to save his brother's life, after both had suffered years of physical abuse at the hands of the parent. A deeply personal and emotional reason, which would in no way make him a likely or suitable candidate for recruitment as a cold, clinical, professional assassin for the CIA. Plus a person who has committed a single crime of passion hardly has any "skill set" to speak of, nor is killing someone for self-preservation or to save another indicative of "limited morality". On the other hand, if he had been a true sociopath it would have been difficult to make his character sympathetic and relatable for the audience. Thus the creators end up falling between two stools.
The movie always foreshadows each exotic location by showing its name in block letters on the screen, followed by a slow pan or trucking shot of the scenery, however after telling us we are in "Monaco", tax haven of the rich and famous, all we get is a dingy torture room, never any glamorous outdoor sequence, talk about cheap. Made me laugh, when I should have been contemplating the evil of Chris Evan character.
Then, when our hero is tricked into standing over a trap door and falls into a empty circular stone lined well, for some reason there is a large water pipe at the bottom which he can use to unleash a torrent of water to assist in his escape. Not just the mouth of a pipe to feed the water in, but a whole length of pipe running across the bottom of the pit, so that our hero can loosen nuts and bolts. I know it's just a movie...
Later, on a third floor of an ancient apartment building, there is another trapdoor in the floor, which allows access into a secret under floor area that has enough head room for Ryan to stand up in, when the outside shot of the building indicates there is no room for such a space to exist. I know it's a just a movie but juxtaposing shots of this fallacy makes it harder to ignore. (Plus the secret passage in the wall is traditional for the upper floors of buildings)
Unfortunately the usual modern Hollywood misconception of criminals being able to operate successfully when they show no loyalty or trustworthiness at all is perpetuated. Chris Evans character casually shoots the guy who has trapped Ryan Gosling in the well, rather than paying him off as agreed. Later he also shoots the Indian assassin rather than paying him. This is not how real criminals behave, whether they work for a government agency or not. Even sociopaths understand that casual betrayal is not a viable strategy for sustainable success or survival.
They use the "trusted old mentor blowing themselves (and some bad guys) up to buy time for the hero" plot device twice in the same movie.
The Indian assassin suddenly develops a conscience when Chris Evans says he is going to kill the young girl, after previously killing a number of Czech police officers, who were just doing their job, leaving their wives widows and their children without fathers.
Ryan Gosling does the same thing in the final scene, killing a number of CIA agents who are only doing their job, guarding the girl as they have been requested to, not trying to kill her. Acceptable collateral damage? Cue uplifting vintage 1970s pop music.
pariapt - 8 January 2023 What the hell was that?! I CAN NOT believe that I watched it till the end. I just wasted 2 hours of my life😭😭 it is a copy of movies like John Wick, Anna, Jason Bourne etc. I think you got the point! Absolutely nothing new. NOTHING! You could've easily guessed the ending after watching the first 15 minutes. Nothing exciting was in the movie. I just watched it bc of Chris Evans but he totally disappointed me. I skipped most of the action parts bc they were sooooo long and boring. Plus in many points they made characters dumb to make the story longer. During watching this I was making "how it should have ended" memes and thinking the mc could've easily won but the writers were so lazy they didn't change those parts or make them more believable. LAZY WRITING I call it. LAZY WRITING.
allmoviesfan - 30 December 2022 The Gray Man A better book to film adaption than Tom Clancy's Without Remorse, but Mark Greaney's novel is still streets ahead of the movie product. The book is ALWAYS better than the movie. That said, Anthony and Joe Russo - apparently of Marvel fame - have overseen a visually spectacular movie with some excellent action scenes and Ryan Gosling as Courtland Gentry aka The Gray Man aka Sierra Six is an engaging lead, and Gentry is definitely a bad hombre. Chris Evans as former CIA assassin and now private contractor Lloyd Hansen is a worthy adversary, and portrays the volatile Hansen with a mean, ruthless edge. I also thought Billy Bob Thornton as Donald Fitzroy, the man who founded the Sierra program, and who recruited Gentry from a Floridian jail. The action is fast-paced, and the ending is impressive, but I keep coming back to one thing: it isn't as good as Greaney's books. Read the book before you watch the movie to avoid disappointment.
emryse - 7 December 2022 The Russo Brothers May have Peaked with the MCU As someone who likes Marvel movies, possibly more than I should given their quality, I've seen a solid chunk of the Russo brothers filmography. While from Winter Soldier to Infinity they have consistently produced some of the MCUs best work, they never seemed to have the same ownership of their films that say a James Gunn or Taika Waititi has. What I'm trying to say is there films lacked a certain stylistic flair, while still being enjoyable there was nothing that ever screamed to me, this is what the Russo brothers brought to the table. Perhaps that's an unfair assessment but never the less I was excited to see some of their post MCU work and find out what they would do without the creative shackles of having to fit into Feige's masterplan. So on a flight back from Greece over the summer I decided to see what they had to offer with the Gray Man. Turns out, not much.
The story is fairly predictable, it follows a super covert Jason Bourne style spy with a special set of skills that means he can beat up anyone he faces, who goes awol after learing a secret he wasn't supposed to know, this leads to him racing round the world with a price on his head, hijinks ensue. There are hundreds of films that have done this before and will be hundreds to come, so how does this one set itself apart? There's a little girl? I guess that's somewhat unique. Ok, so storywise there isn't a whole lot going for it, what about the acting? Ryan Gosling is decent, he's doing that quippy tough guy with a heart of gold thing that, again has been done to death. Ana De Armas is in the film. And then there is Chris Evans, after starring in all of the Russo's MCU films he returns here as the villain. Playing a very similair character to the one he played in Knives Out, he's the snarky wiseass who is just evil because it's fun, again this isn't new. Chris Evans is a fun actor and I've seen a lot of praise for him bringing some much needed life to this xanax of a film but honestly he's just trying too hard for me here, it doesn't come across as sincere and feels forced.
Alright so let's not focus on the actors, this is an action film, how's the action. Bland, one or two creative ideas mixed in but not enough to keep things interesting. Honestly this film is almost a perfect 5, it's not necessarily bad but there was nothing here that felt original or different in any way from the rest of the genre. The only thing that makes it a 6 was that it was fairly well shot.
Painfully average but my eyes liked it.
bspeterson-89146 - 15 November 2022 Too much of too much! Knowing I'd seen other movies with similar plots, I had a good idea what this movie would be like but decided to watch it anyway. What swayed me was the star power of Ryan Gosling. He came through again, but midway through the movie it seems the movie's producers decided to make this story more of a comic book action flick. The movie became unbelievable with gun battles and car chase scenes followed by kung fu style fighting that never seemed to stop! Gosling, was made to look like a superhero after being shot, stabbed, kicked, and punched over and over, only to instantly rebound. All that was missing was a super hero cape. I gave this film a only a 6 because the special affects were very good, but sadly overtook the plot and acting. The movie could have been 30 minutes shorter and great. Everyone likes action, but in this film there's too much.
pshtiwanace - 4 November 2022 Too generic to be that good This movie is eyesore, i was expecting more with the castings but it turned the otherwise. The only thing that this movie can offer is buckets over buckets of blood and tons of guns, nothing new. A very wide number of haphazardly shot clips, merged together to complete a 2 hour of nonsense. This has nothing to do with cinema, not even close. Heat, 007, Taken..etc, would easily smash this down to the ground. Besides, the plot armor was so boring, it needs to come off. Really! Ryan survived all that gun shots and knife wounds?. Anyways. The movie was full of s*** and the real problem it was never going to end like it was for eternity!!
