    Oh Baby
Look I don't know who copied who ?

But it doesn't take a genius to figure out either First Omen or Immaculate is playing copycat Nuns getting pregnant by unnatural means and one is pregnant with the other devil and this one is pregnant with God TRIPPY I like both movies for different reasons I give this a slight edge I like we get some blood and gore and it's not changing something already established in a previous movie (See my review of The First Omen) for clarification Although I like this better by no means is it perfect The story could use a lot of work (More of a personal gripe from me) But did she have to scream so loud during labor I was turning my volume down as low as possible and still be able to hear the movie and (Spoiler) I sat through this whole movie and never got to see the baby I felt cheated Yes I know we didn't see the baby in The First Omen But beings how it was a prequel we got to see the baby in other movies Anyway I say all that to say: It's good but it's not great.

An interesting but underdeveloped spin on the nunsploitation sub-genre
Immaculate (2024) has a bit of a sad history, as it was initially canned during casting in 2014. Sweeny who auditioned during said casting, however, punted the project for a number of years and eventually got a director to revive the project. Strictly speaking Immaculate falls within the nunsploitation sub-genre. There is however slightly more meat to the main plot. The uneven and, at times, dead-slow pace is however more than slightly indicative of a plot-idea which eventually became the entire plot. The plot initially had a bit of an Umberto Eco mystery feel to it, but that fizzled out towards the end of the first act, when the secret project took on a more Spectre / Blowfeld (early organised crime in Bond films) set-up, ie an underground lair where a bizarre plan is being hatched. That said, it is not as bad as it sounds. The cinematography and practical gore effect kept the film within the genre and the script and acting (mostly by Sweeny) added a good measure of suspense and psychological terror to the mix. The elements however failed to find a sweet spot. A decent film but not really anything above average.

You leave the movie theater with the feeling that something was missing.
Sydney Sweeney's movie in nun mode that had generated so much expectation finally arrived on the Mexican billboard.

Its premiere was originally going to occur on a date close to that of the film: The First Omen. They decided to postpone it since their themes are similar; both from the Nunsploitation subgenre, very popular in the 70's and which seems to be gaining strength again.

Comparisons cannot be avoided. They are very similar in their premise with some variants. Definitely, The First Omen wins.

Inmaculada is well made, it has good locations, good photography, it even manages to generate a sinister atmosphere with a very gory final stretch with an abrupt and shocking ending... however you leave the movie theater with the feeling that something was missing.

Already in the cold analysis, I understood that the film was made as a vehicle for its protagonist. Not in vain Sydney Sweeney is also the producer of the film.

The problem here is that they forgot to build the supporting characters. The nuns who are companions of Sweeney's character in the convent seem like filler. They appear because the protagonist has to interact with someone, but they don't contribute anything.

Not even the priest Sal (played by the Spanish actor, Álvaro Morte), contributes much. When their motives are known, they are explained quickly and hastily.

Characters that feel hollow and poorly constructed, all in the desire for Sweeney to stand out at all times.

What makes The First Omen intriguing and such a good film is the wonderful construction of the supporting characters, they contribute a lot to the development of the plot. In Inmaculada, they are a decorative element.

    A beautiful looking disaster
"The First Omen" but everything is upside down - Savior instead of Antichrist, plot holes instead of a good script, a tragic movie instead of a good one.

The first half is a good film about a young woman who finds her place in a convent, realizes her dreams and is happy that she can cultivate her faith in the capital of Christianity.

The second half is some pseudo-slasher, time jumps, female Rambo and a dozen or so scenes of someone's brain flowing out of their head. The ending is also completely crap. The only thing that saves this film, at least a little, are the very nice cinematography.

Sweeney plays a completely flat (in terms of personality, of course) character whose emotional dilemmas do not match the intelligence of the character she plays. At the same time, in an extreme situation she behaves like a typical character in a horror movie, tripping over her own feet, only to become a terror to her oppressors after a few seconds.

Literally, this film is a jump from one extreme to another. The first half of the film is calm and subdued - the second part is a rollercoaster. Sweeney behaves rationally and acts in an organized manner, and after a while she watches what is happening completely passively.

A movie you forget about once you turn it off. A complete waste of time.
