zelda-34326 - 11 June 2024 Anya Taylor-Joy is sexy. The reason you watch this movie is because Anya Taylor-Joy is hot. Is there any American man who wouldn't look at Anya Taylor-Joy's sexy naked body? As a European man, I love Anya Taylor-Joy naked. Anyway, this movie is set during a witch hunt in America, and later Satan actually appears. And the movie ends with the woman played by Anya Taylor-Joy becoming an obscene woman as Satan said, wandering the streets naked and performing obscene sex rituals. I like movies with this kind of atmosphere. I hope there is a sequel to this movie. Anyway, Anya Taylor-Joy is very, very sexy. And this is a sexy movie.
phuckracistgop - 4 March 2024 So so Very tiresome theme of going black throughout the film and the usual ask a question and get a blank stare as a response.
Certain scenes were muddled and dark/hazy making hard to figure out what was happening.
Add the predictability of who was going to kick the can and verbiage that was hard to comprehend, and not necessarily because of old English dialect. It was more on the sound quality and Mumbling of their lines.
Add a bit of overacting of the possessed child prior to his expiration in the attic.
After that when it came to various plot holes, or just bad parenting when the brat twins were acting out and the oldest daughter caught the flack while multitasking.
Funny how I didn't notice the matriarch of the family never contributed to the running of their farm, yet would go ballistic at the drop of a dime on the oldest child.
The no ending end was rather stale with the witches convention within walking distance of the farm, but never located by the father or Caleb while setting traps.
My take on the family would be
1. Religious fruitcake father
2. Schizophrenic mother
3. Doe-Eyed daughter/soon to be witch
4. Disobedience oldest son/2nd victim
5. Bratty twins who finally got what was coming to them.
jeromesgabilo - 30 November 2023 A MODERN CULT CLASSIC BUT TOO DEPRESSING I would call this A24 film the best medieval horror piece out there. Its slow burn charisma and engageable cast makes up for the perfect casting in an terrifying supernatural horror about an ancient witch who slowly creeps up to the lives of an ordinary English rural household. Its perfect setting allowed it to have a very impressive cinematography and production design. The dark and light undertones complemented each other and set an effective mood for the story to take place. Anya Taylor-Joy was brilliant in one of her first features. Her performance really executed her ability to embody innocence and cunning.
calebcalebwhitney - 9 November 2022 WTF did I just watch? No spoilers here, because I don't think the film actually has an ending or any plot reveals. At least not any that could be explained. There's a moronic family that gets kicked out of their village in the opening scene. They speak in a sort of pseudo post-Elizabethan English, and they don't use electricity or lawnmowers. One thing we do know is they are ultra religious. Lots of talk about Jesus and Hell but that's pretty much the extent of what I could make of the dialogue. Apparently, as the title suggests, there's a witch somewhere in the wilderness. There's also lots of goats, which is nice, but not enough to save the film from itself. As the film faded to black I wondered, What's the significance of the staring rabbit? Who is Black Philip? I don't understand, but the film isn't interesting enough for me to search out answers.
Here's another thing... this film is abstract in the extreme. Not Pablo Picasso abstract, mind you. In fact if I compared this movie to painting, it's like when you see those paintings made by elephants that are given a paintbrush. The result is pure rubbish. Loads of silence between moments when the characters speak, and when they do utter sound they're mostly unintelligible. Lots of wandering around in the woods doing nothing and they also do a lot of whining and crying about a baby that they've lost. Some of the discussions are about whether the baby is in Hell, whether a witch or a wolf stole the baby and whether the baby might have been eaten by wild beasts. Who knows... perhaps the baby got tired of these idiots and toddled off to find his own way. I didn't care about any of these people or what they were doing. You won't care either, and why would you?
usobryson - 7 October 2022 Crucible fans Great script, beautifully filmed with amazing child actors! I grew up on The Crucible and related content so I had expectations and I'm not disappointed! Harvey Scrimshaw as Caleb turns in the *MOST* incredible performance and his mastery of Olde English is positively riveting, I look forward to seeing more of him in the future! The subtle inclusion of lore and imagery helps to move the story forward without giving away too much. But brace yourself for the pecking crow, you'll cringe regardless of how steely you believe yourself to be. Also, Black Phillip isn't a sweater wearing yoga goat so it's okay if you don't want to cuddle him.
JaneBingley - 16 September 2022 Perfection This is a rare piece of perfection in a world of mediocrity.
Nothing should be added, nothing should be removed, its amazing as it is.
Its terrifying, horrible, sad, eerie, scary and gloomy.
Acting is very good, and so are the costumes and scenery.
I loved the dialogue, which uses words from the seventeen'th century.
I'll have to repeat it all, since imbd requires me to write 600 words, and nobody's got time for that.
