Kingkillacruz - 3 March 2024 Great movie if you understand this is an adaptation I put this movie on because I became aware of the story via the video game that came out in 2014.
I figured I'd see a riff happen between superman and batman, and a team fight happen somewhere in the end.
Horrible pun intended when I saw the flash be killed in an instant quickly in the movies opening scenes.
The movie does a great job at showing the adoration Wayne and Kent have towards one another, and they really jump into the "Okay what happens next" set after Superman disposes The Joker.
You really feel the civilans pain through the unjust killing of a couple of them for ridiculous reasons (superman kills a warehouse full of objectively teenagers who are having a joker theme edm party while shouting at superman that hes a facist, you also see a dude get blown up for littering).
Theres a brilliant scene between superman and Mr. Terrific where they play chess and Mr. T (no not that one, although a man can dream...) and he outlines the slipery slope Superman is headed towards.
The movie takes a nice emotional piviot where after Dick Greyson is killed by no one other than Damion Batman grieves and is comforted by Catwoman in a really humanizing scene for the Bats.
We also see Diana try to comfort superman and as she leans in for a kiss he pulls away.
Unlike the video game Diana is snapped out of her loyalty for superman when she realizes Sups is on the deepend.
A couple of other charaters die pretty brutally. Hawkman beaten to death by a replica of his own weapon, Cyborg (will he ever catch a break) ripped in half, Mr Atom shredded on a molecular level, and Solomon Grundy whos probably going to wait for another monday to be reborn.
All in all if you grew up on the comic book adaptation or are one of those "HEEEY THATS NOT HOW IT HAPPENED" people that cant handle suprises youll not like this movie. However if you understand that this is simply using the sorce material and adding a spin to how it plays out, youll enjoy it. P.s. Deadwing is a dumb name, but man I loved that character.
jasonhughes-28027 - 26 May 2023 Just watched and I loved every moment! Absolutely loved the movie! I've played some of the games and haven't read the comics for it, but I truly enjoyed every second of what this wonderfully animated films as doing. I really like politically charged superhero content and stuff that challenges the idea of what a character stands for, and this is just absolutely that! If you like the darker side of DC and want something that satisfies characters going against classic depictions, then this is the movie for you. It might not always be source accurate, but it's absolutely fantastic in my opinion as a DC animated film. The ending was just perfect to me and really made me feel that there was weight to what was happening along with all the other events throughout. Must watch!
mikemdp - 6 December 2022 Apalling There must have been much more nuance, context and characterization in the original comics run of this story. But what is on display here is an absolutely puzzling trashing of the "Superman" legacy. You'll be going, "Wait, what? Why?" throughout.
Long story short, Superman suffers a loss so devastating at the hands of the Joker that his rage drives him to try to eliminate all conflict on Earth. This sees him become a dictator of sorts, killing indiscriminately for even the slightest infractions (what he does to a group of teenage Joker fans at a rave will drop your jaw).
Unbelievably, heroes such as Wonder Woman and Cyborg ally themselves to Superman, even as they witness him carry out these terrible acts and partner with one of Batman's most terrible and violent foes.
Why Superman becomes a murderous despot, and why reasonable heroes would join him is barely explained in ham-fisted exposition that really just exists to somewhat justify Superman's astonishingly cruel violence.
You'll watch this movie shaking your head, thinking, "Why is Superman doing these terrible things?" and "Why is DC taking an absolute dump on its most valuable IP?"
The answer is, I suspect, rooted in this film's source material, which I haven't read (and which, I'll argue, probably most of this film's audience hasn't read). The comic book story was probably a thoughtful deconstruction of the superhero mythos; likely a meditation on the idea that power, even super power, is corruptible under certain and maybe tragic circumstances.
But none of that intellectual argument is present in this film. It's just Superman acting completely out of the character developed for him over the past nearly 90 years, with a lot of bloody and violent set pieces, and an ending even more stupid than that of "Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice."
Considering also the weird character designs and clunky limited animation, what results is an absolutely appalling entry in the often otherwise excellent DC Animated Universe film series.
I can't not recommend this movie highly enough.
cowthecows - 23 July 2022 Overall Enjoyable, just too fast... I came to see this movie after some clips of it was shown on some social media and caught my attention. I decided to watch it and honestly it was a nice movie although something seemed off key... the reason for it was actually the rush the directors had given to it.
First rush is Joker kill. Just at the beginning of the movie they just started getting joker moved and then the next thing you know they started blazing and superman accidentally killed his wife and his unborn wife. When I saw that superman killed joker I was like... okay?? What's next??
Next things was trash too, very moved and rush, no emotional building, no reason building just..." I'm doing this just because I can". The movie overall was pretty rushed, there was no building whatsoever, this movie had the potential to be 10 outta 10 if it would be divided into 3 parts at least 40 minutes each.
Then you could have the room for buildup and such. One other thing which bothered me was superheroes killings.... Like literally it led me shocked when I was watching those dead scenes. Does DC just have too much Superheroes or what? And let alone their deaths does not makes sense at all. Dick's death was the most disrespectful one. How can you die just from a metal stick?!
You are a damn superhero the laws of gravity and physics gets defined when you are on a universe like this... Atom death didn't make sense too... The only reason this movie takes 4 stars is just for the action thrill. Plot deserves -10.
amariaaron - 15 April 2022 Seriously... what was this ? This movie is a turn in the wrong direction. Firstly, the animation style is not that polished DC animation we've come to know and love. Secondly, wayyy to much story is being packed into a movie that is just 1 hr and 18 minutes long. There's some minutes spent on some dumb jokes and I had to question how those scenes made it in with its extremely short duration.
I understand that this is an adaptation but some of the "creative decisions" that were made to distance it from the source material was just pointless. The voice acting was bland at best and most of the dialogue was boring.
About an hour into this 1 hr and 18 minute movie I had to ask "what does this have to do with the dissent of Superman?"
The creators of this film scrambled for an ending and decided to go with a very lazy and anticlimactic one.
