debstroud-33261 - 13 June 2024 BORING af The most exciting part of this movie is the cover art. I had high hopes for this movie, however 45 minutes and I turned it off. I couldn't take another minute, dragging by.. The Main characters are not interesting at all. There's not really anything that grabs your attention in these first 45 minutes even if the movie does pick up the pace that is too long period of time to wait for anything at all to happen. A mature audience thriller should grab and hold your interest long enough to get to the mid part of the movie. This movie is one hour and 33 minutes long oh my goodness I don't believe I could live this long watching this.
lavatch - 7 September 2023 The Monroes Take Care of Their Own! Miss Lauren Elizabeth Monroe was born into the prestigious and powerful Monroe family. In an effort to make her domineering father Archer proud of her, she rose to become the district attorney of Chicago. Upon the death of Archer, Lauren learns from Harold, the family's loyal attorney, that the father left a final task to be performed exclusively by his daughter.
Archer made many mistakes in his life, but his most serious was probably trusting in Lauren to handle this unfinished piece of family business. Lauren's younger son, the cutthroat politician William Monroe, would probably have been a better choice. For Lauren now must deal with a man that her father has held in captivity in a subterranean cell on the family estate for thirty years!
The filmmakers developed superb dramatic tension between the prisoner, Morgan Warner, and Lauren. There was an ebb-and-flow to their interactions with Lauren faced with a difficult ethical decision with what to do with her captive. For his part, Morgan is much like the Count of Monte Cristo, who was locked away by his enemies in the forbidding prison of the Château d'If, desperately hoping for a chance to escape.
The pacing is brisk throughout the film, especially in the home stretch when Lauren's mother Catherine becomes prominent. The mother is shrewd like her husband, and she speaks what is probably the most important line in film when she proclaims that "the Monroes take care of their own!"
gianmarcoronconi - 20 May 2023 Boring A film that really starts very well and begins by telling a very particular story and with various twists and turns right in the first moments of the film, a pity that after the introductory part is over, the film becomes monotonous and all the same, everything that happens is very predictable and the film immediately takes a very monotonous turn and even the final twist does not change the perception of the film by the viewer. The plot is particular but really very linear, that is, the incipit is very strange and very inspiring but then everything becomes too linear. So the film in my opinion is a huge waste of inspiration because it could have been much more than the trivial film it is.
IdgeE - 21 December 2022 Was this a Lifetime or Hallmark movie? With the exception of Connie Nielsen and Michael Beach, I didn't recognize any of the actors. That being said, within 5 minutes, the dialogue was so forced that I tuned out. I didn't really pay attention to the whole inheritance part and started paying attention again when she found the enslaved man. At this point, I watched just to see if the acting would get better, but it did not.
The lead, Lily Collins was miscast and I would venture to say is just not qualified for lead roles such as this. Her face and mannerisms are too juvenile for the DA role she was supposed to hold. And pulling her hair back in a bun and putting red lipstick on her made her look like an angst-ridden 15 year old pouting about someone in her basement. She was very awkward and not only was her dialogue not flowing, but her body movements were jerky and awkward as well. Funny scene with her brother when she "slapped" him, just a hot mess. And he was just as bad.
Nice to see Michael Beach in a role that isn't a creep or an adulterer. He's had some really terrible roles but this was better. His acting is okay, not the greatest in the world but far better than that Lily girl's.
Connie Nielsen did what she could, but she didn't save the movie either.
Story itself was simple, but had potential. There was too much tension and verbiage to not miss the point of it all. Don't know what the point of the key lime pie recipe was, but the man obviously had a hold on the girl's father and it was also obvious what it was, well before the big reveal.
The husband and daughter were just filler, not even essential to the movie or to the character. And it would have been nice to see what happened to the brother in the end, clearly he needed to pay for some wrongdoing.
wruzek - 29 October 2022 Some good in it but not much. With a bit more effort this could have been worthwhile. It seems producers just want to grind out B movies. As it is, there are more holes than a golf course and I won't bother to number them and I advise not to expect much from this. There was potential and some good acting but believability is null without plot tightening and closure answering the "what about...". About 3/4 through our heroine starts blaspheming so as to rub salt in the wounds of believers. That was so out of character for the previously portrayed squeaky clean district attorney. It's truly hard to find a decent flick on Netflix and just about a zero chance for those made for them.
dytdmvsc - 9 October 2022 Worst movie I've seen in a long while I'm upset that I wasted two hours of my birthday on this. I was constantly yelling at my tv. How does one make it to be the DA of a major city but have no common sense? She made decisions you'd expect from a child. There's no way someone would hear this man's bare bones story and then take him on a car ride to the forest. She's a DA she prosecutes criminals, how is she so stupid and trusting? Just all around unbelievable.
Her stupidity aside, her father not only kept this man prisoner but confided in him?! Why was he even riding with him after he found out what happened to his wife. He's managed to make millions of dollars but doesn't realize how much of an insane risk it is to tell your captive all your secrets?
