jcross7997 - 17 May 2024 Just watch it Set aside any preconceived notions of what you thought or hoped it might be. Watch it for what it is. When you do that you will see that it was just a 'movie' that shouldn't have been made because it's BORING and really doesn't connect with the audience. This is not a representation of teenage girls. I never acted or reacted like this. Where's the movie that gets made to represent just normal teenagers. I could not identify with this one and most people I know never watched it again. A good movie is one that you will want to watch again, or occasionally. This is not it, this was about something more and it shows. They weren't invested in something that stands the test of time and generations. This was a one hit one note boring movie.
ahmedeldimllawi - 3 February 2024 brings me to tears every single time After watching this 5 times
The story gets better every 5 minutes
the animation is impeccable
and everything feels very real
I think the unique thing about this movie is how relatable this is, how hard we are on ourselves depicted mei and her mom and mom's mom overly unforgiving attitudes, and in the movie they find their forgiving selves . It becomes a very heartwarming moment when they finally forgive . Added with a dash of humor, saying this movie is perfect is honestly a bit shameful; it is transcendent.
And I learnt not to be perfect after watching this movie too.
How the director stresses human's humanness through animation is really mindblowing , which also shows how beautifully written this movie was . Genius!
aadirao-73666 - 12 December 2023 Peak Cinema Honestly, I'm glad stories like these are being made because they are NEEDED. Not just for kids to understand all of this, but also for the parents to see how their behaviour effects their kids. How letting kids be kids and understand their world from their povs and not what YOU went through as a child yourself, not leashing them in just for the sake of it is so crucial in the world that drastically changes within MONTHS while the experiences don't change much.
Pixar is doing great with understanding and telling these family dynamics in a fun and healthy way, which are two of the most important things in story telling. Dealing with sensitive topics in a way which is not too in the face is the cherry on top.
I look forward to more such stories in the coming year not just from Pixar but also other production houses.
lollobrigido - 26 December 2022 How Disney's Turning Red normalises false accusations Disney's Turning Red is an animated comedy I vaguely registered to be on the "woke" spectrum. Wikipedia calls it "the first Pixar film solely directed by a woman" and a negative review was cancelled as racist and sexist.
Summary:
Thirteen your old girl has a crash on an older boy with whom she never interacted IRL.
She draws sexualised pictures of him (which is an absolutely normal thing, unless it was done by a boy).
Her abusive mother sees those drawings and drags the daughter to confront the boy in a public setting.
Mother physically attacks the boy, he is showed to a chair.
Mother accuses the boy: "What have you done to my Mei-Mei?".
Daughter is unable to contradict her angered mother, she is complicit with the false accusation.
Mother threatens the boy with calling a police.
Mother: "How old are you? Thirty?" Boy: "I'm seventeen."
Mother ramps up accusations: "Oh, see, see? This is what happens when you don't wear sunblock and do drugs all day! She's just a sweet, innocent child. How dare you take advantage of her!"
Mother calls the boy a degenerate.
Mother questions the daughter, she does not refute the false accusation. Mother: "Now, is there anything else I should know about, Mei-Mei?" Daughter: "Nope. All good."
The daughter was this close from giving in to the abusive adult's pressure and accusing the boy of serious crimes just to save her own neck. We have seen this many times in the real life. Yet the whole scene is done for a comedic effect. It is not further mentioned throughout the story and neither the mother, nor the daughter admits a mistake or set things straight. Apparently attacking, threatening, degrading and falsely accusing a 17 year old boy of a life-ruining (for him) crime is funny and fit for a woke, PG 10-12s cartoon. Mind you, we are living in a society where even a copious amount of exonerating evidence does not protect a men from consequences of false accusation.
Gotta condition those kids early, right?
cyberknight - 20 November 2022 2nd worst Pixar film, only behind "Cars" It's definitely not as bad as "Cars", but it takes the second worst Pixar's rank easily (worse than "A Bug's Life").
The protagonist is both selfish and selfless, annoying and cute, dumb and smart and so on, just to force-advance the plot.
Its ugly human designs don't match the extra fluffy demonic red panda design. At once, I wished the protagonist stayed a demonic red panda forever, both because her personality as a demon was such an improvement over her whiny human one, and because it was much gentler on the eyes.
And why the hell had the story be played in a China town in Canada, when there're no distinctive Canadian elements thrown in? Just to hide the fact that the makers had no idea how to design a Chinese town without that looking fake? Guess what, Canadian China Town looked very fake, and lamely designed.
The soundtrack was... Was there a soundtrack? I simply can't remember it! It's worse than forgettable, it's unnoticeable!
I watched this film with my three kids. Before that, we watched another cartoon and they laughed the whole time. The contrast with the gloomy silence that followed was the definitive verdict. Taking another Pixar film, even "Soul" managed to extract some laughs from them, now and then...
owencrean - 2 October 2022 9 out of 11 stars Could have been more accurate to real world historical events.
According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. It's wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway, because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.
Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead.
Well, the years start comin' and they don't stop comin'
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground runnin'
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb
So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the backstreets?
You'll never know if you don't go (W-w-wacko)
You'll never shine if you don't glow.
littletiggermom - 11 September 2022 Tired of Movies Villainizing Parents Just watched this. As an Asian-American who has supportive parents and a great relationship with my mom, I am turned off by the constant narrative of "tiger moms" and "helicopter moms" in Asian American stories.
But what is even more annoying is the CONSTANT teaching in these new Disney movies about, "follow your heart! Who cares what your parents say? They don't know any better, go ahead and disobey them!! Do what YOU want to do!" there is no medium of actually communicating, respecting and learning from each other. I don't believe most kids these days will benefit from the message of when your parents tell you something you don't like, just ignore their instruction.
