    Yo ho ho
A visually stunning piece of animation. The plot is a cross between Moby Dick and How to Train Your Dragon. There is nothing particularly new here, but it is done very well. It falls down, for me, in two places. (1) the comedy accents are awful and sound like the local villages production of Pirates of Penzance. (2) Maisie is just annoying. She's always right and she just grates. Apart from that, this is an enjoyable family film with big sea monsters. And a cute little one - just for those extra merchandising opportunities .

I understand that a sequel is planned - that's not something that would be unwelcome.

    A MIGHTY BEAST...!
An animated Netflix feature from last year. Taking place in a world where sea creatures are hunted due to the fear they will attack cities, ships routinely go out on the hunt, w/full backing from the crown, to claim their prize. A ready for action crew is set to hunt but a young orphan girl is discovered as a stowaway on board. Instead of heading to port to return her, the chief mate takes her under his wing which leads them to become strange bedfellows when they end up in a dinghy going after a creature (which we'll come to know as Red). Not succeeding in felling the beat, the pair land on an island & soon discover, since they're still alive, Red has sentience & the attacks from him & his kind are more of a retaliation for the unprovoked attacks they've endured throughout recent memory. Making it back home, our heroic pair hope to convince not only the captain of their ship but the royals themselves about the error of their ways. What could've been another chapter in the How to Train Your Aquatic Dragon series soon becomes a parable about humanity's inhumanity in regards to hunting what they perceive to be prey. The look & texture of the piece rivals anything the Mouse House routinely puts out while wisely keeping any songs (heard as sea shanties sung in taverns) to a minimum w/the voice actors, which include Karl Urban, Dan Stevens, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Jim Carter (from Downton Abbey) & Kathy Burke, strutting their vocal stuff to great effect.

History is written by the mightiest
I liked the message of the story at the end of animation where the young girl said to the people in front of king and queen that: what was written in our books about the monsters was fake and by the mightiest( kings ..) for their benefits. I want to generalize this argument for some of the old history or even religious books that are based on superstition. Those without having diverse sources. Exagerating and sanctifying the ordinary people without addressing the bitter facts. So, whatever is written in the books should not be accepted blindfoldedly.

We must think and contemplate on what we are reading.

Best kids film I've seen - great diversity and morals
I've never seen a film with such an equal balance of gender and race and disability. The king and queen's guards are women and men, the random villager is a woman, the random cart driver is a woman. I can't think of any other kids film where there's actually a 50/50 split if you consider all non speaking characters.

Much better moral the how to train your dragon too. The point is there's no such thing as good and evil. The quote repeated in the film that "you can have been a hero but have been wrong" is the point. It's not "beasts are actually good and kind", they're not, they kill the same way the hunters kill. The point is that fighting because you think the other side is bad is wrong. In how To train your dragon they team up against another evil, the point in this film is that there's no such thing as the good/ bad guys.

Really great character animation and voice acting. I could watch this again and again, and that's saying something for most children's films.

Amazing first half...then..ummm..yeah...welll i finished it
I was not expecting much. But the first half was very good. Sure it was predictable, but it was also entertaining. A Moby Dick story about a world full of monsters that will definitely kill you if you give them any slack..And the rites of passage for a young man about to become captain, and the Captain unsure of what he will do afterwards.

All this gets literally flushed down the toilet, where in the 2nd half of the movie is actually a completely different movie all together. We are introduced to a young girl that befriends a cute blue creature that will not leave saddled with trying to become friends with the Dragon..i mean sea monster. It becomes so childish, so dumb..And then there is magic. WTF.... You cant just introduce magic halfway into a movie that except for the giant sea monsters, is grounded in reality.

I dont know if i can eve watch the 2nd half its so bad. I dont want to.

So i went back and watched the 2nd half after reading the reviews...it does get better indeed...BUt why inclued a halftime show that is meant for 3 year olds...alienating adults in the process..meanwhile after that immediately goes back to being an adult movie.

    High expectations weren't met
I started watching it with high expectations, having watched all of the director's previous works. I finished watching, feeling kind of disappointed. Everything just felt cliché and flat to me. The story didn't quite touch my heart. Jacob's character development seemed a bit sudden. I felt like there was more chemistry between Maisie and Red/Blue than between Maisie and Jacob. And the ending... The whole kingdom suddenly doubting their century-old beliefs immediately after hearing a 2-minute-long speech from a random child is kind of unbelievable, even in a fantasy setting. My niece didn't really enjoy it either, she said there wasn't enough beasts.
