It's more like social commentary about racism and injustice than a horror movie.
This sequel expanded on Candyman's muddled fictional mythology and mixed this mythology with some real people and events to give sociological and political background on some hot topics like racism and injustice to African Americans in the United States. I found it strange that they mixed some real-life racism-related crimes and their victims with a classic horror movie's fictional story for social commentary, but it's just my personal opinion. There are too many problems in this sequel, and I think the biggest problem is that this movie is definitely not as scary and thrilling as the first one. It's narrative is also unfocused, and that makes the story hard to follow because they crammed too many things into the script, which makes the script kind of messy, drawn out, and convoluted. I wasn't also impressed by the acting. The main guy's acting is really wooden; the character he played is also quite bland and hard to empathize with, and the supporting actors and characters aren't better than him. The movie is also quite slow-paced. It lasts 1.30 hours, but it feels much longer because of its slowness. Overall, I found this movie less scary and less enjoyable. It's a well-made movie; that's why I didn't give a low point, but it just couldn't give you the first movie's suspense, thrill, and horror.

I hated every second of this movie.
A horror movie?... Or a social injustice flick? The story was cringy and boring. Unnecessarily use of CGi (Which was bad). It was over the top and I had a hard time watching it (mostly because of the story) If it was only me I would stop watching but unfortunately I wasn't. The people I was with thought it might get better haha. Spoiler - it didn't!! It's a horrible movie and everyone was glad it was over. Why make it like this? And what's with the critics score?? Afraid to be honest or trying to be the equivalent of a male feminist? I think it's awful what happened to black people in the past and what happens to black people to this day. But to watch a movie and hearing over and over how evil white people are is making me sick. I used to love black movies, yes also the ones with terrible evil whites with horrible facts, but this is getting ridiculous lately. Keep feeding the race battle Hollywood, I'm out!!

    Not completely terrible
I liked the premise of the movie.. How it connected to the OG Candyman.

At first from the movie trailers, I thought they changed the entire story, so I have been hesitant to watch...

I just felt the ending was so forced. They could have done better with that. After Anthony talked with his mom it seems like they just threw everything together. They could have done better.

They definitely could have slowed down the progression from artist to Candyman.. it all just felt rushed. Or Williams part in it.. needed some more from that.. I just felt I needed more of something the whole movie.

But overall, it was decent enough... Better than the 3rd Candyman forsure..... that was a train wreck.

Honest social commentary thinly (on purpose) masked as Horror for Smart People, most def.
I loved the original and was quite leery of a remake. This reticence had zero to do with any/all of the White Supremacist/Republican terminology associated with it. Simply put, this film is amazing. Call it whatever you want, it is simply quality from every angle. Yes, there is a lot to pay attention to, but I prefer my films to be complex. Anyone protesting its departure-erasure of the "Candyman Myth" (wow! We actually prize cinematic myth over rather-obvious social commentary??) can have their moment but it is destined to be a short one. This film does justice to Barker's original idea but creates its own reality. A better, more impactful one. All the horror i there, on several levels. Intelligent viewers will get it. Neo-Nazi "purists" (double-entendre, if you will...) will miss it, probably, or hate it for being so accurate. Watch. This. Film.

Say my name, say my name
No pun intended - and the bees are back too. Although they never really left (does that count as a pun too?). This is widely seen and talked about as a remake. Even in the extras on the disc where people talk about the movie and the legacy of Candyman and its social impact and message, one of the people calls it exactly that: that it is a remake.

But you know what? It is not! The furthest I would go, would be calling it a reimagening. But the truth of the matter is, it is a sequel! But it seems to only acknowledge the very first movie - it even quotes it, has some puppet reenactment of the events of the first movie ... and the backstory it had. But it has even more backstory - not just from the Candyman we know ... but ... well you have to watch this to see.

And while we do get a new Candyman of sorts (visually speaking), there is more than just nods to Tony Todd here. Which again is nice to see. And maybe because we open up a new page here (which circling back to the remake claim), the movie also uses new music cues. There are some neat behind the scenes extras on the discs. We also get some deleted scenes - they do not give us that much apart from an extended ending - although it is called an alternate ending I think. Again, you can call it what you want ... just do it once and not 5 times in the mirror ...

Great way to continue the first one's storyline
Since 'Get Out' I am excited about everything where Jordan Peele is involved and I got what I expected again: great story-telling, strong, hard to swallow but absolutely important social message, ongoing tension on a high level and some horrific moments. The new Candyman fits perfectly into the Get Out - Us - Nope dimension.

Don't let these poor ratings fool you, this version of Candyman picks up the first movie's storyline and continues masterfully and it surprisingly manages to elevate it. Loved how the origin story got more depth and meaning, also loved the few out-of-box twists and playful solutions with the mirrors.
